Message from Chairman

I hope you’re managing to stay safe and well in these difficult times. The Coronavirus pandemic is, of course, dominating all our thoughts and has resulted in a shocking loss of life and huge disruption to all aspects of our lives. Apart from the obvious health and economic effects, our social and sporting activities have been put completely on hold. Cricketers should be enjoying the start of the season by now, but this has had to be postponed until late July at the earliest. I should be down by the white wall in Terenure reminiscing with my fellow “mature” colleagues about former exploits, which, like good wine, improve with age!

The Charity Sector has also been exceptionally badly hit and I will outline below how the virus has impacted on Lord’s Taverners Ireland.

Results for 2019.

Firstly, let me summarise our results for 2019. This was a very successful year and we were able to build on the considerable achievements of previous years.

Revenue

We were the beneficiaries of two major fundraising events during the year:

(1)   The RevUp Motorcycle Event, organised by the Dead Ducks Motor Cycle Club and held over the May Bank Holiday, raised over €31,000 from sponsorship. This was a fantastic achievement and we are extremely grateful to them for their amazing support.

(2)   Our Christmas Lunch was again a really great success and enabled us to generate a net profit of over €43,000.

The annual Golf Outing was a resounding social success and contributed over €3,000. We also benefited from subscriptions and other donations of over €25,000.

Expenditure

What did we do with this money? We focused on three main areas:

(1)   Two Buses: In 2019 we were able to contribute the €52,000 needed, after contributions from the recipients, to purchase two buses. These were configured to enable children with special needs to participate in sporting activities. The beneficiaries were Kerry Wheelblasters (in Tralee) and The Arch Club in Portmarnock. I had the privilege of presenting the keys to the buses at the Christmas Lunch.

(2)   Table Cricket: We are the nominated Charity Partner of Cricket Leinster. Given our history and our origins, this is a vital partnership for us. Table Cricket is a very fast growing sport and enables children with special needs to participate in a competitive activity. Lord’s Taverners Ireland makes a major contribution to the cost of this Cricket Leinster programme- last season, this amounted to a payment from us of nearly €18,000. We are very grateful to Naomi Scott Hayward, who has enthusiastically promoted and developed Table Cricket in recent years.

(3)   Other Equipment: We were also delighted to be able to purchase other sporting equipment last year amounting to €16,000 in total. This included two soccer powerchairs which cost €10,000.

Prospects for 2020.

The Coronavirus pandemic is having a serious adverse effect on our fundraising in a number of ways:

(1)   RevUp Motor Cycle Weekend (organised by Dead Ducks Motor Cycle Club): this was due to take place on the May Bank Holiday Weekend, but has had to be cancelled. We had hoped that this event would have raised even more than last year- over €35,000- so its cancellation is a particular setback.

Current Charity Work by The Dead Ducks Motor Cycle Club: The Members of the Club have, however, been extremely busy in recent weeks using their bikes to deliver medical equipment and supplies to hospitals and nursing homes literally all over the country. Please use this link https://revup-2020.everydayhero.com/ie/revup-2020-registration-deposits if you would like to show your appreciation for what they do and assist RevUp/Lord’s Taverners Ireland continue helping young people wth special needs by making an appropriate donation. A contribution of any amount would be very gratefully received.

(2)   Christmas Lunch 2020: The prospects for our Christmas Lunch this year are unclear. We will inform you of our plans as soon as these have been clarified.

(3)   Golf Outing: Our annual golf outing was scheduled to take place 14th August 2020 but due to continuing COVID-19 restrictions the decision has been made to cancel the event.

Impact on our Charitable Giving:

We are currently reviewing how we can best operate within the constraints imposed by our seriously reduced fundraising activity. There are a number of activities that we are very keen to support:

(1)   Partnership with IWA Sport: Earlier this year, we agreed to nominate IWA Sport, a division within the Irish Wheelchair Association, as our Preferred Recipient partner. We have committed to them that we will contribute €13,000 this year towards the cost of vans which will be used to organise sporting events for children with a physical disability.

(2)   Table Cricket: We hope to be able to continue to support the efforts being made by Cricket Leinster to develop Table Cricket.

(3)   Other Applications: We are also considering a number of other worthy applications for support. We would like to help these but this, of course, is subject to the necessary funds being available.

To carry out our plans, we absolutely need the continued support of our members and friends. I would like to thank you for all the assistance you have given us in the past and hope that you will also contribute generously this year.

Be sure to look after yourselves,

Paul Farrell - Chairman

REVUP 2018 delivers on it’s promise!

Lord’s Taverners Ireland partnered with Dead Ducks Motor Cycle Club in 2018 with the joint goal of arranging one of the largest fundraising events to date for our charity and what a success it was!

 REVUP 2018 took place 5th – 7th May 2018 and nearly 50 motorbikes departed Dublin on a 2 night / 3 day mystery tour.

The aim of REVUP 2018 was to raise enough funds to purchase a minibus for St. Michaels School Holy Angels in Chapelizod in memory of one of REVUP’s founders, Aidan Lynam, who was tragically killed in 2015.

On Friday 21st December this promise became a reality as a brand new minibus was delivered to St Michaels School Holy Angels and the reception received was incredible.

Some of the REVUP participants took time off work to escort the bus in through the school gates and to see a large group of students, staff and parents clapping, cheering and waving a thank you banner was a sight never to be forgotten. Some bikers were even seen putting their helmets back on to discreetly wipe away some happy tears – but we won’t mention any names!

The bus was opened up and surrounded by the students who proceeded to sing Christmas carols and take it in turns to board it. Some were even taken on a spin around the car park.

Following this was an invitation into their school hall for a private mini concert to listen to some songs sung by a choir made up of students from various classes throughout the school as a thank you and the morning ended with some lovely refreshments.

It was a very proud morning for the family and friends of Aidan Lynam and a huge testament to all participants of REVUP 2018!

Lord’s Taverners Ireland play Santa to the Benhaffaf twins!

Lord’s Taverners Ireland were delighted to present Hassan and Hussein Benhaffaf with two custom made handcycles at our recent Christmas lunch and Paul Ryan ensured that the boys received them in time for Christmas Day!

Thank you so much to their mother, Angie Benhaffaf, for the following beautiful words……

“I want to thank The Lord’s Taverners and all their supporters from my heart. Since Hassan & Hussein were (3) years old they have asked Santa for a bike & every year we failed to find a suitable bike for them due to them having only one leg & half a pelvis. It broke my heart every year to see a bike on their Christmas wish list & to every year not find them one as everything had two pedals. So last year the twins stopped asking Santa for a bike. It’s something every child gets and something so simple that we all take for granted. So yesterday when Paul Ryan appeared with two especially made Hand Cycles from the Lords Taverners the dreams of my two little boys came true. Their excitement & emotions were overwhelming for us to watch & we had happy tears as we watched them cycling up and down our road. The twins whole lives have been in hospitals and over 50 surgeries & yet they never let it define them, or hold them back. Instead they live every day to the fullest and with a smile and teach us all the truly important values of life. Thank you all for making the dreams of two very special little boys a reality- we are all so grateful xx love Angie ❤️”

Hassan & Hussein Benhaffaf

Twins Hassan and Hussein Benhaffaf, from Carrigtwohill, Cork, were born joined at the chest in UCLH Hospital, London, 2nd December 2009 and underwent a 14-hour long operation in 2010 to separate them.

They shared everything except their hearts and were left with half a pelvis and one leg each. Hassan and Hussein are regularly in and out of doctor's care in both Ireland and England and to date have undergone more than 52 operations between them and have a life of surgery ahead of them.

Despite this, the boys live a full and active life and are involved in sports, wheelchair basketball, Athletics and swimming. Their wish was to go cycling outside just like their friends and take part in bike sports and Lord’s Taverners Ireland were delighted to help.

In December 2018 Hassan and Hussein Benhaffaf were presented with two hand cycles funded by Lord’s Taverners Ireland, which were made specially for them just in time for Christmas.

Surprise Guests at 10th Annual Golf Outing!

Friday 17th August was another great day out for Lord’s Taverners Ireland as 21 teams turned up to play in the 10th Annual Golf Day at Castle Golf Club.

Although there was rain in the morning, the weather Gods smiled fondly upon us and it cleared for the afternoon, resulting in an enjoyable day for all players.

Scoring was extremely high this year and we were delighted to congratulate the first ever all ladies team to win the competition. Team Cricket Ireland came first with a score of 92 points, followed by team Alan McClean (91 points) and team Alan Lewis (85 points). Angela O’Connor won the ladies longest drive and Clive Davis the men’s longest drive.

All worthy winners were presented with some excellent Italian wine and after play, the teams and guests enjoyed dinner back in the club house.

After dinner attendees were treated to a huge surprise when two members of the Ladies Irish Hockey team and World Cup Silver Medallists,  Anna O’Flanagan and Chloe Watkins took part in a questions and answers session led by our compere on the night, Alan Lewis.

Funds raised went towards the cost of purchasing specialised equipment, enabling us to continue ‘Giving young people, particularly those with special needs, a sporting chance’.

We look forward to returning to Castle Golf Club in for our 11th outing on Friday 16th August 2019!

RevUp 2018 a Huge Success!

We are delighted to announce that thanks to the 40 motorcyclists and pillion passengers who gave up their time 5th – 7th May 2018 to travel over 1,000km, enough funds were raised to purchase a minibus for St Michaels School Holy Angels, Chapelizod.

This was Lord’s Taverners Ireland first year working with Dead Ducks Motorcycle Club and their annual REV Up event and it as a fantastic weekend with lots of laughs and many new friends made.

Our base for the two nights was The Hodson Bay Hotel, Athlone and the setting couldn’t have been more perfect during the fabulous weather as the motorcyclists relaxed in the evening after long days on the open road.

The presentation of a minibus to St Michaels School, Holy Angels is particularly poignant to Dead Ducks Motorcycle Club and most of this year’s participants as one of its students, Robyn Lynam, is the daughter of Aidan Lynam, one of the founders of REVUP who was tragically killed in 2015.

REVUP 2019 will take place 6th – 8th May 2019 and Lord’s Taverners Ireland hope to be involved with it once again.

Daniel Tighe

There's running a marathon... and then there's doing it pushing a buggy. Sinead Tighe from the Kiltipper Road in Tallaght, Dublin, took on the 2017 Dublin City Marathon while pushing her son Daniel, nine, in a running chair.

Daniel is one of only 40 children living in Ireland with Sotos Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that affects sensory processing and growth. It means that by the age of 10 months he was the size of a three-year- old and it's estimated he'll grow to over 7ft.

By the time they got to the start line on 29 October, Daniel weighed between six-and-a-half and seven stone, and was over 5ft 1ins tall.

Sinead needs to raise €100,000 to make the necessary modifications to their home and the marathon was one of their main fundraising events.

Lord’s Taverners Ireland will be supporting Daniels Voyage by providing funding support for a customised running chair. This support was made possible by the 2017 Golf Classic at Castle Golf Club which was superbly organised by Keith Cairns with attendance from a wide selection of our members and friends.

We wish Sinead, Daniel and family well in their fundraising efforts and all support for them from the Lord’s Taverners Ireland community would be greatly appreciated.

You can read more about Daniel at www.danielsvoyage.net and can donate at https://www.ifundraise.ie/1597_daniels-voyage.html

2017 Christmas Lunch

Our annual Christmas lunch took place in The Intercontinental Hotel Ballsbridge on Thursday 14th December 2017.

Once again, thanks to the generosity of attendees and the support of many individuals and companies who donated items for our main and silent auction, we were able to present our 12th minibus to another very worthwhile cause. The key for the minibus was very graciously accepted by Principal Sheelagh Jones on behalf of our 2017 recipients, Cheeverstown School.

Lots of laughs were had when well known comedian Oliver Callan took to the stage and we were also delighted welcome Kingsley Aikins as our after dinner speaker.

Members of The Dead Ducks Motorcycle club were in attendance to launch a new and exciting fundraising event REV UP 2018 and more details of this special event will follow shortly!

A great day was had by all and we look forward to doing it all again on 20th December 2018!
